RADM Barrett new BPC commander

Royal Australian Navy Commodore Tim Barrett has been appointed Commander of Border Protection Command, and promoted to Rear Admiral.

"Rear Admiral Barrett brings a wealth of experience to this position, with a career spanning 34 years and decorations such as the Conspicuous Service Cross and a Member of the Order of Australia," Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O'Connor said.

The Minister also recognised the outgoing Commander, Rear Admiral Allan du Toit, for his commitment to Border Protection Command over his two-year posting, which ended at midnight Monday 8 February 2010.

"Rear Admiral du Toit has worked tirelessly over his posting and I thank him for his dedication and professionalism in undertaking this difficult role," Minister O'Connor said.

"I wish Rear Admiral du Toit all the best in his new position as Deputy Chief, Joint Operations Command and have no doubt that his experience at Border Protection Command will stand him in good stead for this equally challenging role.

"Both Rear Admiral du Toit and Rear Admiral Barrett are officers of the highest order and I am confident they will each excel in their new appointments."

Border Protection Command protects Australia against a number of threats including the global and regional problem people smuggling, illegal foreign fishing, counter terrorism, maritime pollution and more.
